
This Luigi business didn’t click for me until I got stuck into the sequel: Sparks of Hope. After Peach unloaded, Rabbid Luigi came along and unleashed a trio of toxic shock waves. It’s the kind of game you’d be happy to show your grandma but then smirk when Peach blasts away a foe with a shotgun and granny asks if that bear-like thing is okay. I’d draw the line at calling it nice, but, thinking about it a bit, it is rather nice, actually. Feels a bit dirty to describe the game, any game, in such simple terms, but it’s what spins around in my head when I try to sum it up. I don’t approve of this phrase, but I’m going to say it anyway: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is lovely. And with her followers and a sleazy substance called Dark Age, she wants to bring ruin not only to the Mushroom Kingdom, but to the entire galaxy. The unusual fate community around the red-robed plumber and the crazy Rabbids is faced with a great threat, this time in the form of the nasty Misera. As with almost all games involving Mario, Sparks of Hope’s background story wears off pretty quickly. We played Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope extensively for our test and found out where the title delivers – and where it still has some catching up to do.
